About Us

The owner: Jonathan Denwood

A Website designer and developer, Jonathan provides all the technical skills needed to create a spectacular Web presence; but more, he's a business-savvy entrepreneur himself.

Back in his native home, the UK, he owned a family retail business. That gave him a solid understanding of small business branding and marketing, plus a deep appreciation for what you face every day in the real world of running a business – as well as in the virtual one.

Now, as a Carson City Web designer, Jonathan builds Websites, not just Nevada Websites, but Bay Area Websites, Reno Websites, and sites for international clients, too.

Interview with Jonathan

by Judith Harlan of Harlan Editorial Inc

What special skills do you have to offer clients seeking great Web design?

I have the technological skills that my clients need, but more importantly I feel that I can understand my business clients because in the UK I was the owner of a retail family business. I understand the day-to-day problems small- to medium-business owners face. I know how difficult it is to break away from the essential operations of a business and work on marketing for future business.

No owner has the time to really learn the Web well. I know that, so I make sure I can explain the new rules of the Web efficiently. I also invest a lot of time in staying current with Web development and SEO, so my clients don't have to.

I thought I needed a graphic designer and a website developer; can you do both?

Well I’m a bit all-rounder by personal choice. I like doing the design process plus the coding of the website. I don’t personally feel you can separate the two from each other and be a real Web designer. Many in the industry would disagree and would expect designers to just work in Photoshop and give the design to an Html CSS programmer who would then build the design.

I personally think you lose something in breaking apart the design and programming into two separate parts. The two feed into each other, so as I design, I know what the code will take and as I code, I see possibilities in graphics and dynamic elements that I may not have thought of if I were just doing the graphics. Each side makes the other side better.  I have also done quite a bit of Flash Action-scripting and Javascripting, and with those tools, you have numerous additional design possibilities.

How much Search Engine Optimization (SEO) can you really build into a site?

SEO is an area that is of fundamental importance in any Web design or Web project. I've spent a great deal of time and money studying expert search engine placement, and I continue making the investment just to keep current. SEO is a constantly changing and evolving field of knowledge. It's an integral part of Internet marketing and ecommerce, and it will continue to be one.

I trained with Richard John Jenkins, one of Los angeles' leading SEO experts. This boosted my knowledge base well up the ladder; it was a great experience, and I recommend anyone wanting to become an expert to contact Richard. He's one of the best!

What do you think is the most important tool or technology that has really changed the Web design industry in the last couple of years?

Coffee! I personally would say it must be coffee! I'm only joking – a bit of English humor. But seriously, when it's in the early hours of the morning and a site has to be finished for the next day, coffee is a very important tool for a Web designer.

However, if I must be really serious, I must say that semantic markup and modern CSS has completely changed the industry over the past couple of years. Also, the rise of blogs and CMS technologies has changed the industry enormously.

What do you see as the new up and rising technology or trend that will develop in the coming year?

That's a difficult question. I would say that with Google being able to index Flash websites more easily, I personally think that Flash will make bit of a comeback.

And this is exciting too: Adobe has developed its new Flash technology called Flex, which is a cross-platform technology that offers amazing possibilities. The development interfaces that will allow you to build powerful Flex applications are still in their early development stages; however, in the coming year I expect Adobe to really pour resources into this area. Look for new ideas emerging from this new tool.

And now the hard question: how'd you end up in Nevada, so far from your hometown in England?

Well, my wife Eileen, who is American citizen, liked the area and wanted us to settle here. I knew the area quite well because I had visited Lake Tahoe and Reno on a number of occasions over the years. I just love it here. It was still a bit of a life-changing decision to move here, though.

On the business side, I was working toward a shift in focus already. I had received a degree in Interface Design, plus I had managed to receive a Masters in Interactive Design. I was also running a busy retail business. It was almost impossible to do both well. So, when I decided to move to the U.S. for the love of my life, it was also a great chance for me to be free and concentrate on Web design and development.
