Wittgenstein was a demanding friend. However, many were ready to pay the price of time and emotional energy which was required to be a friend of Ludwig. One of Wittgenstein's closest friends at Cambridge was Frank Ramsey. Ramsey was an undergraduate at Cambridge. He was also a personal friend of Ogden who was one of Wittgenstein's old friends from Vienna. Ramsey at eighteen was seenas one of the most promising mathematicians of his time. He translated for Ludwig on many occasions and became a close friend.
Ludwig was devastated by Ramsey's early death. Ramsey suffered from a spell of severe jaundice and had been admitted to Guy'sHospital in 1930, (Guy's was one of London's leading teaching hospitals). He had an operation to discover the cause of the condition. After the operation his condition became critical and it became apparent that he was dying. Frances Partridge, Ramsey's lover, has described how she found Wittgenstien at Frank's bedside on the evening before his death. She remarked that Wittgenstein's kindness
